What Are Sun, Moon and Rising Signs?
☉ Sun sign
The sign the Sun was in when you were born. It describes your core identity, your drive and what you are here to express.
☾ Moon sign
The sign the Moon was in at your birth. It shows your emotional nature, your instincts and what helps you feel safe.
↑ Rising sign
The sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. Also called the Ascendant, it shapes first impressions and how you approach new situations.
How This Calculator Works
The calculator finds where the Sun and Moon were along the zodiac at the exact moment you were born, using standard astronomical formulas and the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology. For your Rising sign, it also needs your birth place and time, because the Ascendant changes roughly every two hours and depends on your latitude and longitude. Your local birth time is converted to universal time using the historical time zone for your birth city, including daylight saving rules.
Why Your Birth Time Matters
The Sun changes sign about once a month and the Moon about every two and a half days, so your birth date alone is usually enough for your Sun sign and often enough for your Moon sign. The Rising sign moves through all twelve signs every day, so a few minutes can matter if you were born close to a sign change. If you are unsure of your time, check your birth certificate or ask a family member, and treat results near the edge of a sign with caution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same as a full birth chart?
No. The Big Three are the foundation of your chart, but a full birth chart also includes the other planets, the twelve houses and the angles between planets. It gives a much more detailed picture than three signs alone.
What if I don’t know my birth time?
Tick “I don’t know my birth time.” You will still get your Sun sign and usually your Moon sign. If the Moon changed sign during your birth day, the calculator tells you which two signs it could be. The Rising sign cannot be found without a birth time.
How accurate is the calculator?
Sun and Moon positions are calculated to a fraction of a degree, and the Rising sign is accurate when your birth date, time and place are correct. Results can differ from other tools only when a placement sits right on the edge of a sign, or when a different zodiac system, such as sidereal (Vedic) astrology, is used. This tool uses the tropical zodiac.
Why is my Rising sign different from what I expected?
The most common reasons are an incorrect birth time, the wrong birth city, or confusion between a.m. and p.m. Birth certificates sometimes record times to the nearest quarter hour, so a small shift can change the sign if you were born near a boundary.
